The LPGA joins the technological indoor golf scene with the WTGL for the upcoming season

Summary

The LPGA Tour will welcome teams to the new WTGL indoor golf league starting next season. This announcement was made Tuesday by entertainment group TMRW Sports and the LPGA, who emphasized that the WTGL will operate independently of the TGL, though it will maintain a similar format to the tech-enabled indoor league. Matches will be held at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Key details, such as the number of four-player teams that will participate in the WTGL's inaugural season, are still being finalized.

The TGL currently has six teams, and a seventh (Detroit) will be added for its third season in 2026-27.

Commissioner Craig Kessler has focused his administration on four pillars: trust, visibility, fan growth, and financial stability, since taking office in July. In a phone interview, Kessler said, “We see our partnership with TGL as exciting in two of those pillars: fan growth and visibility. Any opportunity we have to put our women in the spotlight, competing and showcasing their personalities, will attract more fans.”.

Key details

Kessler mentioned that prior to her appointment, discussions had already taken place regarding the inclusion of women in the indoor league, and that those conversations intensified in recent months. The WTGL will be played primarily during the LPGA offseason, with the possibility of overlap with the TGL. The LPGA season ends a week before Thanksgiving in November and begins in late January. By 2026, the first Asian swing is scheduled for mid-February, and the TGL will conclude before the first major at the Masters in April.

TMRW Sports reported that the TGL, in its inaugural season, attracted the second youngest audience in sports, second only to the NBA, with a median age of 52 and 411% of the audience in the 18-49 age group. The TGL's second season began in late December, and its third game will be played Tuesday night.

Mike McCarley, founder and CEO of TMRW Sports, commented: “WTGL is another step in creating a modern, media-focused version of a century-old sport that appeals to today’s sports fan.” McCarley added that a women’s league has been in development since the launch of TGL last year and that “now, together with the LPGA and its athletes, we look forward to creating a platform to help showcase LPGA stars.”.

Statements and context

Kessler believes the format will help strengthen the connection with fans while showcasing the players in a new light. The games will last two hours, allowing the audience to hear the conversations and pay closer attention to six players (three per team), rather than just catching glimpses of them during a full-field event over four days. “What makes this unique is that we’re talking about building stars, and this is an opportunity to delve deeper than ever before into those personalities,” Kessler said.
