Frequently Asked Questions About Golf Balls (II)

Second installment of real-life questions about golf balls. Clear, direct, and useful content for your game.

How many holes can a golf ball last in good condition?

If it doesn't hit hard surfaces or get scratched, a modern ball can last several rounds (30–54 holes). Replace it when you see cuts, cracks, or obvious loss of shine/coating.

Can a tournament be played with balls recovered from the water?

Yes, as long as they are conform and are in good condition. The committee may require balls from the List of Conformal Balls from R&A/USGA. Prolonged water exposure may degrade performance: check the cover.

What is the difference between a cheap golf ball and a premium one?
  • Cheap (2 pieces, ionomer): more durability and distance, less spin on approach.
  • Premium (multi-layer, urethane): more control and short spin, softer feel, higher price.
Do golf balls expire over time?

Unused and properly stored, modern (solid-core) balls maintain their performance for years. Wear, scratches, sun, and water shorten their lifespan.

What does the number printed on the ball mean?

It mainly serves to identify your ball in the field. In the past, it could indicate compression or batching, but today it is almost always a visual symbol.

How many balls can a player carry in the bag?

There is no limit in the Rules of Golf. You can carry as many as you like, as long as they comply. Practical advice: 6–9 balls for 18 holes is usually sufficient.

What is the regulation weight and size of a golf ball?

Minimum diameter: 42.67 mm (1.680 in). Maximum weight: 45.93 g (1.620 oz). Must be R&A/USGA compliant.

Do colored balls affect performance?

Color does not change the performance itself; what matters is the model. Choose the color by visibility Depending on the light and background. Matte finishes may feel slightly different, but the difference is minimal.

Which balls are best for winter or cold?

In the cold the ball becomes “harder”. Opt for low compression to regain speed and feel, and high-visibility colors. Store balls indoors in a warm environment before playing.

What happens if I use a different ball in the middle of the round?

Between holes yes you can change brand/model unless the committee applies the Local Rule “One Ball”. During the same hole, you must finish with the same ball, except when a Rule allows substitution (e.g., relief) or if it is cut/cracked.
